On an ordinary night, by the lonely seaside of an isolated picturesque Goan cottage, Annie (Manisha Koirala) is born to a deaf-mute couple, Flavy (Seema Biswas) and Joseph (Nana Patekar).

Traveling through the world of magical melodies and underwater wilderness, Maria unfolds before Annie and her brother Sam, the power of music. Trapped between the silence of her parents inside and the hearing world outside, there is one sound Annie loves most. The sound of music. She develops a passion of the piano, her only prized possession. But to make ends meet, the family has to sell of the piano to Willy (Raghuvir Yadav), the local antique dealer, who after Maria's death becomes Annie's friend, philosopher and guide. For Joseph and Flavy, Annie's voice and music are an irony of fate. Annie lives with an impossible dream - to hear her parents call her by name, at least once in her life.

Sam's death in a tragic accident leaves Annie alone with grave responsibilities thrust on her young shoulders. She grows into a beautiful young woman, silent and intense. Despite being gifted with a beautiful voice, she has sentenced herself to living in her parents' silent world.

Amidst the flurry of colours, dance and frolic of the Goan carnival, Raj (Salman Khan), a wild, unconventional, highly inspired musician sees a simple yet enigmatic Annie and is instantly smitten. Raj has traveled from Bombay and lives atop the village lighthouse in the middle of the soaring waves, striving to create music out of everything. Even Annie's silence.

Raj comes into Annie's life and opens up a whole new vibrant musical world for her. He wants to set free from the chains of her self - imposed exile, to convince her that living her own life does not mean depriving her family. But she is torn between her dependent parents on one side, and Raj, music and a career as a singer on the other.

How she copes with her conflict becomes the crux of the film.
